Description:
The Assistant Librarian post is in the Bibliographic Data Management (BDM) Department in the Library’s Content Management & Open Scholarship Division. Its purpose is to help with backlogs building up due to staff supporting the Old Library Redevelopment Project. The Department oversees the workflows and standards associated with bibliographic metadata. Its core remit is cataloguing contemporary monographic publications in all formats (print and digital), acquired through UK and Irish legal deposit, purchase, and donation. Staff also look after metadata for digitised objects, collection analysis, and stock management. The principal public catalogues concerned are Stella Search, edepositIreland, and Digital Collections.
The team of Assistant Librarians in BDM is responsible for the in-house creation of high-quality bibliographic data, including the classification of books on the open shelves (based on Dewey Decimal Classification), and with a particular emphasis on the Legal Deposit Libraries’ Shared Cataloguing Programme (partnering with the British Library; the National Library of Scotland; the National Library of Wales; Cambridge University Library; and the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford). Members of the team contribute to all departmental workflows as needed and may be asked to supervise Library Assistant (LA and Exec.2) colleagues. They liaise closely with colleagues across the Library, e.g. on subject collections, and often contribute to, or lead on, projects.
