Waterford City & County Council invites applications from suitably qualified persons who wish to be considered for inclusion on a panel from which vacancies for the position of Assistant Parks and Landscape Officer shall be drawn. The Assistant Parks and Landscape Officer will work as part of a team that plans, designs, develops and manages the public parks, open spaces and public realm across the City and County of Waterford.

The Assistant Parks Landscape Officer will contribute to the development and implementation of strategies, policies and standards around the provision and management of the public realm and assist with the management of natural
resources within parks and open spaces

The Assistant Parks and Landscape Officer will be expected to assist with the supervision, control and carry out public realm services given to him/her within the service area to which he/she is assigned.

The Assistant Parks and Landscape Officer will operate under the direction of and report to the Executive Engineer of the section to which they are assigned. The Assistant Parks and Landscape Officer will also report to the Director of Service of the Section to which they are assigned, or any other person designated by the Director of Service. Notwithstanding the requirements of the post, successful applicants may be assigned to any service area/role within the Local Authority at an analogous level by the Chief Executive at any time.


The particular duties and responsibilities attached to the post may vary from time to time, without changing the general character of the duties or level of responsibilities entailed. The post holder may therefore be required to perform duties appropriate to the post, other than those detailed hereunder, and to take instructions from and report to, an appropriate Officer or such designated Officer as may be assigned from time to time by Waterford City & County Council.

The duties shall be such as may be assigned to the employee from time to time by the Local Authority and shall include the duty of deputising for other employees of the Local Authority, when required, and such duties as may be assigned to them in relation to the area of any other Local Authority.

The duties include:

  • Assisting in the management of natural resources within the County, including arboricultural management, and bio-diversity conservation and the preparation of work programmes in relation to same.
  • Monitoring and reporting the delivery and standard of deliver of plans, programmes and projects.
  • Implementing actions under the Council’s Climate Action Plan
  • The management of existing tree stock in public realm and the identification of locations for new planting.
  • Staff management.
  • Financial control.
  • Dealing with representations from Elected Members and community, resident and interest groups.
  • Preparing designs and drafting proposals/plans/reports/studies for projects and services.
  • Assessing and reporting on planning applications, wayleave applications, land disposal requests and other related queries.
  • Correspondence administration including ensuring that correspondence is responded to in accordance with customer standards.
  • Researching and drafting replies and reports to deputations and area committee meetings.
  • Co-ordinating with other Council Departments.
  • Contributing to County-wide development, management and maintenance of the public realm
  • Preparing documents for procurement of supplies, services and capital projects.
  • Carrying out such other duties as may from time to time be reasonably assigned.
