The Generation Engineering department in ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) is the centre of engineering for ESB’s generation businesses and provides consultancy services in generation technology for external and international clients.

We currently have an opportunity for a Chemistry Specialist to join our Generation Engineering team. The successful candidate will support Engineering and Major Projects in the delivery of power plant projects (Thermal, Hydro’s, Distributed Generation & Renewables) within both new build and existing projects.

Key Responsibilities
 

  • Provision of specialist chemistry advice for the existing portfolio of ESB power plants including monitoring water/steam cycle (WSC) chemistry performance, undertaking WSC compliance audits, optimising plant operation, condition assessments, trouble shooting and fault investigations.
  • Develop/maintain expertise in latest developments in power plant water/steam cycle chemistry, chemistry and environmental technology utilised in power plants and related fields and advise on these issues in relation to asset management.
  • Support and develop knowledge on a wide range of laboratory test methods (using internal and external labs) for various scientific testing requirements across generating sites.
  • Support activities and responsibilities related to chemical safety across the organisation. Maintain awareness of chemical safety legislation e.g., REACH and CLP
  • Support continuous improvement programmes in relation to chemical plant and systems ensuring they are implemented within appropriate timeframes, cost and scope.
  • Support procurement processes related to chemistry projects.
  • Manage consultants and contractors where required, review technical reports, and progress solutions to technical issues that arise.
  • Assist in providing technical guidance to generation sites on interpretations of chemical legislation, policies and standards and guidelines.
  • Supporting Generation Engineering Environmental Services in the following areas;
    • Environmental Management Systems, Environmental Licences and Permitting and Sustainability Reporting.
  • Investigate and develop reporting systems and dashboards for monitoring/trending key performance indicators in the areas of Environment & Chemistry.
  • Other duties which may from time to time be assigned by Generation Engineering, Chemical & Environmental Services.
     

Essential

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
 

  • A primary degree in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum experience of 5 years in power generation industry or similar industry with particular emphasis on management of chemical processes and chemical asset management. Experience for example including but not limited to water treatment plants (For ultrapure water e.g., Reverse osmosis /Ion Exchange), chemical dosing and sampling systems, boiler chemistry, chemical process instrumentation, monitoring and advising on improvement of chemical processes.
     

Desirable
 

  • Experience in the following areas is of relevance.
  • Chemical Plant Operation and Design
  • Chemical Safety - REACH and CLP Regulations.
  • Analytical chemistry lab techniques particularly in relation to water treatment plants and water/steam cycles.
  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems, Industrial Emission Licences and Green House Gas Permits.
  • Knowledge of Health, Chemical Safety and Environment Legislation & Standards
  • Keen interest in Environmental Sustainability.
  • Self-motivation and ability to project-manage own work.
  • Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
  • Strong report writing capability.
  • Full driving licence and access to a car.
