Key Responsibilities
- Act independently in the analysis of blood specimens for the purposes of chemical pathology investigations, taking full responsibility for the justification of general examinations in order to reduce risks to patients in accordance with best practice guidelines for Chemical Pathology and the wider Blood Sciences. Supervise Senior Medical Scientists and Medical Scientists in this process if required.
- Liaise with relevant Laboratory Directorate colleagues in the context of a core automated Blood Sciences laboratory with a view to development and provision of an optimal laboratory service to patients in keeping with best international clinical practice
- Keep the Hospital up to date on national and international best practice and scientific changes that will influence the delivery of the service.
- Ensure the laboratory practice conforms to ISO15189 Standards for the Medical Laboratory.
- Maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of relevant equipment, most specifically Chemical Pathology equipment, in the context of a core automated Blood Sciences laboratory, and manage faults effectively.
- Provide advice to clinicians on the nature of Chemical Pathology investigations either verbally or using Hospital information systems
Requirements
- CORU-registered (or evidence of application in progress) medical scientist and eligible for Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine
- Seven years’ experience in a medical laboratory post-qualification, at least four of which were spent in a promotional post
- Demonstrable mature and effective interaction with senior leadership and management
- Flexible, collaborative and committed to achievement of team and organisational objectives
- Patient-focused and influential with excellent communication skills
- Knowledge and experience of compliance with the ISO 15189 International Standard
- Knowledge and experience of risk management
- Experience of JCI hospital accreditation (desirable)
