Position Summary:

The Clinical Course Coordinator is a key member of the Nursing Management Team within the Emergency Department (ED). The role of Clinical Course Coordinator centres on the identification, support and provision of learning opportunities in clinical nursing practice. The post holder is primarily responsible for the effective implementation, evaluation and ongoing development of the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Emergency) in Beaumont Hospital, in liaison with the Senior Education Coordinator and in partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. The post-holder is also responsible for the effective implementation, evaluation and ongoing development of the various options of the Postgraduate Diploma programme and the Foundation Programme in Emergency Department Nursing.


The Course Coordinator will work closely with the Senior Education Coordinator, Clinical Nurse Managers and the Practice Support Nurse in the ED, and the other Education / Course Coordinators to facilitate nurses in the speciality to develop professional clinical competencies. The successful candidate must have a keen interest in postgraduate nurse education, experience of caring for patients in an Emergency Department environment, and a high level of interpersonal communication / people management skills necessary to execute the role effectively.

Responsibilities:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participating in the recruitment and selection of nurses wishing to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Emergency) and its variants (including stand-alone modules, postgraduate certificate and non-specialist postgraduate diploma). The post-holder is also responsible for the effective coordination and further development of the Foundation Programme in Emergency Department Nursing.
  • Coordinating the programmes in conjunction with the Senior Education Coordinator, Centre of Education, CNMs, other Education / Course Coordinators and third level institute. This will include but is not limited to arranging, preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials to course students on both the ED and other programmes as required.
  • Planning and implementing educational and development programmes for all nursing staff in consultation with the Senior Education Coordinator, Practice Development Coordinator, Clinical Practice Support Nurses, Education / Course Coordinators and Nursing Management. This may include but is not limited to conferences, bespoke study days, and short educational sessions.
  • Work alongside the student providing clinical supervision to facilitate their professional development and attainment of clinical competence.
  • Identifying supports & learning opportunities, and encourage and facilitate course students to achieve their learning outcomes.
  • Carrying out summative and formative assessments of course students in collaboration with the Senior Education Coordinator and CNMs.
  • Setting, correcting and moderating such assignments and examinations as may be determined by the Senior Education Coordinator.
  • Liaising with the Clinical Practice Support Nurse to meet the needs of the students undertaking the ED course.
  • Establishing networking links with other clinical Educators for ED across RCSI group.
  • Maintaining appropriate records of student progress.
