Job Summary

The Craft Chargehand Plumber is a key role within the Galway City Council Housing Department. Galway City Council owns and maintains approximately 2,650 social houses at present. The Craft Chargehand Plumber role is critical to the efficient maintenance and management of the Council’s housing stock.

Works will include: planned, routine and emergency repairs as required. Preventative maintenance works are also required on an ongoing basis.

As a Craft Chargehand Plumber the successful candidate will be required to work as part of an overall housing maintenance team. This will involve co-ordinating and carrying out works in conjunction with the Area Foreman, the Housing Maintenance Clerk of Works, Craftworkers, external contractors and General Operatives.

The role of Craft Chargehand Plumber will involve significant interaction with the Council’s tenants and therefore, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required for this role.

The Craft Chargehand Plumber may be required to act as Foreman when needed and is often the first point of contact with Customers and must have good communication skills in order to ensure Customer interaction and service is maintained at a high level of service.

Duties of the post of Craft Chargehand Plumber will include but is not limited to the following:

  • Work as part of a crew to carry out maintenance works including relevant works on the Council’s Housing stock, carry out plumbing (tools) works as directed by relevant Foreman, Clerk of Works or Supervising Engineer.
  • Reporting on progress, problems and any issues to the relevant Foremen, Supervisors, Engineers or as delegated.
  • Determine work priorities and procedures and assigning duties.
  • Ensure compliance with all organisational policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Maintain a daily work diary, recording decisions, events, appointments etc. Produce basic reports on work events to Engineering staff. Complete timesheets for staff members under his/her control, as required.
  • Requisitioning of stores and materials and have responsibility for their proper use and have control over same.
  • Driving Galway City Council vehicles as required.
  • Conduct daily vehicle checks and maintain records.
  • Manage Council resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Act for the Craft Foreman, if necessary.
  • Comply with on call and out of hours arrangements as necessary.
  • Attend to emergency work outside of normal working hours as requested.
  • Attendance at all relevant training courses. This will include training courses in the technology area and courses relating to personal training & development and all mandatory Health & Safety training.
  • Cooperate with all Health and Safety measures within the organisation including workplace inspections, reporting of accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and mobility consistent with the needs of the service including the use of new technologies.
  • Undertaking any other duties of a similar level and responsibility, as may be required, or assigned, from time to time.
