The role of the Data Protection Officer (‘DPO’) is designated on the basis of their professional qualities and expert knowledge of data protection law and practice, and ability to fulfill the tasks designated under Article 39 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016 (‘GDPR’).
The DPO (Research) role, which is based in the College Secretary’s Office, is a senior legal position which provides primary subject matter and legal expertise on data protection compliance for research projects and programmes, both internal to and on behalf of the College. This includes advising on high risk national and international projects such as medical and genetic-based research and projects which use Artificial intelligence (AI) or other novel technology.
The DPO (Research) works with all areas of the College and is a highly influential member of the College community. The successful candidate will be the ‘go-to’ person at Trinity for expertise knowledge, support and advice in all matters pertaining to research and data protection compliance. The DPO (Research) advises the Trinity research community (research staff and students) on data protection compliance imparting knowledge, professional expert advice, support, training and oversight. The role also involves drafting and reviewing of highly complex legal agreements relating to Trinity research projects, including Trinity’s partnerships with national and international consortiums.
This is a demanding and complex senior role which requires a qualified Solicitor (including 10 years PQE) with extensive knowledge and expertise in contract law and data protection law (GDPR, Data Protection Acts 1988-2018, Health Research Regulations 2018 (‘HRR’), Data Governance Act, Data Services Act, Digital Markets Act etc.). Experience in medical law, clinical trials regulation, medical devices regulation, technology and intellectual property law, and AI Regulation and its practical application is also a necessity. The role requires an expert knowledge of the application of these laws in a multi-jurisdictional context.
