Position Summary:

In Beaumont Hospital, the Director of Nursing manages and is accountable for the total nursing services at executive level. The Directorate Nurse Manager is accountable to the Director of Nursing for the work of Clinical Nurse Managers and Clinical Nurse Specialists assigned to her Directorate. The Clinical Nurse Managers and Clinical Nurse Specialists are in turn accountable to the Directorate Nurse Manager for the performance of Staff Nurses, Student Nurses and ancillary staff working with Nurses on Wards or in Departments and/or the delivery of patient care within their service.


Purpose of the Post:

The purpose of this Clinical Nurse Specialist in Deep Brain Stimulation post is to provide expertise and specialist nursing services to patients undergoing placement of Deep Brain Stimulators and the post-operative care and management of these devices along with ongoing management of their Parkinson’s symptoms. The primary focus of the post holder will be to ensure that DBS patients receive timely and appropriate care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care delivery.

The CNS in DBS's caseload will focus initially on patients undergoing surgery for the placement of Deep Brain stimulators referred from the Multi-disciplinary Neurology (Parkinson’s) service in the Mater Misericordiae hospital. for treatment and management of their condition.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The post holder will, in conjunction with the nursing, medical and health and social care professional staff within the NeuroCent Directorate, provide a combination of clinical expertise and patient support for patients presenting to the service for DBS insertion. The post holder will ensure the continuity of care for DBS patients from first presentation, through liaison with multidisciplinary teams in Mater Misericordiae Hospital. The CNS in DBS will focus on the management of patients post-operatively to ensure effective functioning of device post programming and identify possible issues which may impact effectiveness of the device and impact on symptoms and ultimately improve quality of life. The post holder will also be involved in the education and counselling of patients and their families to ensure optimal usage of device as well as on-going education of relevant staff. The post holder’s practice is based on the five core concepts of Clinical Nurse Specialist role as defined by the NCNM 4th edition (2008) in order to fulfil the role
