The Director of Student Life works in collaboration with the Director of Student Activities and the other Directors under the Student Life umbrella to create and support an enriching student life experience for all GSU students. The GSU Director of Student Life will promote retention-centered activities and student engagement across campus while implementing and facilitating opportunities for co-curricular learning and student leadership development. As a primary student advocate, the Director of Student Life will respond directly to student needs and any issues affecting the well-being of our student population, both on and off campus. The person holding this position reports to the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assess student body needs and respond to any questions or concerns from the student body in an effective and timely manner. Provide student support on issues related to student services, university policies, and department processes.Oversees the comprehensive assessment of the Department of Student Life and each of its units. Serve as the advisor to and oversee the Student Government Association, Student Organizations, and Greek Life organizations to ensure strong leadership, success, and guidance, and maintain a strong working relationship with key campus officials.Monitor and update the Student Government, Student Organizations, and Greek Life organizations concerning campus policy and procedure changes.Determine sports and activities of greatest interest as well as the resources needed to implement a successful intramurals program; develop program policies and procedures; outline participant eligibility for each activity; develop competition rules and scoring; actively promote the program's activities; find and train referees; purchase equipment; and attend and oversee program games and activities - many of which will take place after classes and on weekends. Coordinate and lead all aspects of outdoor adventure trips, including scheduling, contract negotiations, promoting, facilitating, staffing, chaperoning, enforcing policies and procedures, risk management, and communicating with participants. Coordinates all aspects of outdoor equipment rentals, including developing policies and procedures, training OAA staff, purchasing, inventory, storage, and repairing and maintaining equipment. Develop a College Bike Share Program, including purchase, inventory, repair, and storage of bikes. Serves as departmental liaison to our High Adventure Club. Coordinate and facilitate staff training and development programs, including employee orientation, mid-year training, and ongoing competency/skill development. Develops, monitors, and annually reviews/updates all associated budgets to provide sound fiscal management for the OAA program. Budgets include operating expenses, labor, and revenue. In conjunction with the Director of Student Activities, the Director of Student Life will hire and supervise part-time and student staff, including hiring, scheduling, assigning work, reviewing performance, and recommending salary increases, promotions, or terminations. Monitors websites, social media, and digital and print postings for designated areas. Work with the marketing team to meet revenue and participation goals. Attend and participate in departmental employee training programs. Facilitates in-service training for employees in assigned areas. Serve on college committees as assigned.Promote effective relationships and work collaboratively with all university departments and programs, including academic departments, the athletic department, Health and Wellness, and Residence Life. Lead collaborative strategic planning efforts that result in initiatives that support the university’s vision, mission, and strategic plan. Work with the Chief Diversity Officer to promote and support cultural diversity programs that enhance the multicultural experience of students, faculty, and staff. Provide oversight and assistance to all the university’s various student clubs and organizations to meet the diverse needs of students. Manage and direct operations of the Student Center and Student Government Office. Provide cooperation and assistance with the overall management of other Student Center operations. Assist in providing student ID services with the Director of Student Activities. Oversee the Pioneer Pantry and build out that piece and the Pioneer Closet. Assess initiatives per universities strategic plan. Oversee and coordinates the week-long new Pioneer orientation and work with other groups across campus to facilitate a successful onboarding process for those students. Oversees the campus ministry. Oversees all Homecoming-related events separate from the student activities provided by the Director of Student Activities.SUPERVISION: The Director of Student Life will report to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
