The HV Cables department is responsible for the design and project management of high voltage underground cable projects for ESB and other clients. Design & project management involves both conceptual and detailed engineering design, design safety management, project programming, due diligence reporting, client design reviews and commercial management. HV Cables is also responsible for technical and commercial inputs to the business development and bidding processes.

The role of the HV Cables engineer is to develop design solutions for project related requirements, progress standards, develop specifications, and provide technical support for procurement of materials and to engage in the training and development of staff.

The Engineer is required to:

  • Prepare electrical designs to IEC and other standards as required including cable rating calculations
  • Perform risk assessments of designs and technical guidance to mitigate the risk by improving the design
  • Preparing material specifications and coordinating the evaluation of tender enquiry documents
  • Produce technical reports including design reviews and due diligence reporting.
  • Undertake quality assurance/inspections on site to confirm compliance with design specifications and manufacturers specifications
  • Provide effective stakeholder manager and engagement.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary engineering team in a proactive way to deliver high quality designs and project solutions to ensure client satisfaction
  • Monitor and manage project costs and programmes where required
  • Engage in continuous professional development to expand knowledge and understanding of underground cable design, demonstrated in quality decision making and continuous efficient and technically sound designs.
  • Continuous improvement is an important part of the role; this includes both an ongoing focus on improving work methods and identifying opportunities for personal development
