The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1974 by the founding Dean, Ms Mary Frances Crowley. The Faculty is the longest established higher education provider for nurses and midwives in Ireland. It has one of the longest established annual international research conferences in Europe and offers a unique and prestigious Fellowship award. The Faculty focuses on taking the professional nurse and midwife on a lifelong learning journey through the professional’s career trajectory to support them meet the needs of society within rapidly changing healthcare environments.
The role of the Executive Vice Dean forms a critical strategic and management link between the Executive Dean, Dean and Academic staff in delivering the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery programmes. They will ensure that the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery effectively delivers the annual operational action plans and the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan related to Transformative Learning.
The primary responsibility for the Executive Vice Dean is to provide leadership in education, lifelong learning, continuous professional development and maintaining professional competence programmes ensuring graduates are equipped to succeed in professional practice. They will be responsible for developing educational business opportunities and sourcing educational/learning programme contracts and commissions for the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
They will lead the development, delivery and continuous improvement of the Nursing and Midwifery education programmes aimed at all grades of nursing and midwifery professionals in Ireland and internationally. The Executive Vice Dean will continuously enhance the curricula and research endeavours of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery programmes of learning and development aligned to RCSI’s values, multi-cultural environment, ensuring academic quality and consistency.
The Executive Vice Dean will also oversee the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery strategic actions in relation to Healthcare and Societal Wellbeing and provide leadership in terms of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Centre of Nursing and Midwifery Advancement. The role will provide leadership in terms of our collaborative and partnership agreements with external agencies such as the PNA, SIPTU Health, NHI, HCCI, MedTech Ireland and others.
The Executive Vice Dean will be responsible for the overall development, implementation and evaluation of the Faculty’s educational and Continuous Educational Programmes programmes and work closely and in partnership with the other RCSI Faculties/Schools and academic staff, clinical partners and professional service functional leaders.
- To inform the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery strategic educational planning in line with RCSI’s Strategic Plan and emerging strategic priorities
- To assess, identify and implement opportunities for the enhancement and expansion of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery educational programmes based on emerging nursing, healthcare and opportunities
- To source, compete for and secure education and learning tenders.
- Strive to develop new partnerships and agreements with diverse stakeholders in collaboration with the Executive Dean.
- Lead programme development linked to health policy and service need.
- To foster and embed a culture of academic integrity and professionalism for the faculty and students in teaching, academic credibility, learning and assessment processes.
- To maintain RCSI’s accreditation of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery education programmes through active engagement and management of the annual / rolling review process
- To oversee all of the delivery of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery education programmes and continuous education programmes in relation to applications, registration, progress, examination and career development monitoring and supporting the progress of student at all stages of their programmes
- Contributing to quality assurance/quality improvement and professional of educational programmes
- Oversee the management of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Fellowship and Membership be examination.
- Oversee the management of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Bursaries.
- Provide leadership and support to the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Centre of Nursing and Midwifery Advancement.
- Leading, mentoring and monitoring of Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery academic staff, as appropriate, in the pursuit of excellence in education provision
- Collects and assesses data and information related to education needs of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery including identification of trends, issues and supporting data to determine a comprehensive education programmes.
- Ensures all programs meet the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery and regulatory expectations and standards.
- Develop and review educational programme outlines, objectives, materials and evaluation methods and procedures.
- Adheres to national education practice standards and stays abreast of and incorporates current research into nursing and midwifery education practice.
- Provides consultation to enhance continuing nursing and midwifery education, professional development opportunities and mentorship opportunities.
- Develops curricula that are reflective of evidence-based practice and uses the appropriate methods of teaching to accommodate learning styles and the learning environment.
- To facilitate student partnership and engagement, including the collection of and response to student feedback.
- To collaboratively engage with RCSI international counterparts, and opportunities for the delivery of an aligned core curriculum internationally.
- To identify, advise and support academic staff in research, particularly with respect to nursing and midwifery education.
- To participate in the affairs of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery as directed by the Executive Dean.
- To ensure that systems exist to collect and provide education information as required.
- To ensure effective communication processes between the Executive Dean, Faculty, students, staff and others and ensure proper information flow within the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
- To manage or delegate via a nominee the allocation of duties of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery as advised by the Executive Dean to ensure effective teaching and service functions, and to support research collaborations.
- Lead and support the digital pedagogy agenda in terms of the MCPD App and the Faculty Eportfolio and seek opportunities to expand the digital pedagogy agenda of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
- Strengthen publication output from the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in terms of education and learning.
- To manage staff development including ensuring completion of annual professional development planning (PDP) for direct and indirect reports.
- To foster scientific and clinical academic staff participation in programme development and delivery.
- To encourage and promote effective and reflective student-centred teaching through example, support and advice.
