Machine Vision Systems Engineer

Description:

As a Machine Vision Systems Engineer, you will develop internal capabilities to assess, design and install automated inspection by means of Machine Vision, Image Processing, and ML technologies. This involves performing research initiatives as well as developing innovative production solutions. You will support existing manufacturing equipment to investigate issues related to machine vision and mentor junior engineers on vision system development and hardware selection whilst leading the technical design and development of projects which are primarily Machine Vision solutions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide input to designing the overall architecture of the computer vision system to meet specific requirements and objectives. Select appropriate hardware components and software tools.
  • Provide support for Vision Hardware and Software control systems for production machines. This may involve software development using Cognex Insight platform and a range of languages such as C#, VB or C/C++ and communication to off camera systems such as Machine control PLC.
  • Develop algorithms and techniques for processing and analysing images and videos. This may involve tasks such as image emulation, image processing, metrology, feature extraction, data acquisition and pass / fail simulation, OCR, and object recognition.
  • Develop and enhance cross-functional team relationships and works cross-functionally to identify and resolve technical and organisational issues.
  • Support site efforts in Implementing machine learning models for tasks like object detection, classification, and tracking. Support the design of the overall architecture of the computer vision system to meet specific requirements and objectives.
  • Select appropriate hardware components and software tools. Write code and software to implement the vision algorithms, control hardware components, and interface with other systems and software in the application.
  • Manage the storage and retrieval of large volumes of image and video data, including data pre-processing and organisation.
  • Identify and implement performance optimisations to ensure that the vision system meets speed and efficiency requirements. Continuously collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to integrate the vision systems with larger systems or platforms, such as robotic control systems or industrial automation systems.
  • Conduct rigorous testing, validation, and benchmarking to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the vision system's output.
  • Ensure the vision system adheres to relevant divisional and corporate procedures and policies, as well as industry standards and safety regulations, and ensures appropriate change control is followed for vision related updates.
  • Implement security measures to safeguard the system from unauthorized access or data breaches, particularly in applications involving sensitive data. Complete project deliverables and monitor project schedule and scope changes to assure team can meet delivery requirements.
  • Ensure the best machine vision practices are employed by the group, to maximise equipment effectiveness.
  • Assures that appropriate resources (personnel, tools, etc.) are maintained in order to assure Quality System compliance and adherence to the BSC Quality Policy.
  • Establishes and promotes a work environment that supports the Quality Policy and Quality System.

Key skills/knowledge/experience:

  • Solid experience in the design and development of end-to-end Machine Vision solutions.
  • Working experience of Machine Vision and a proven track record of having implemented image processing tools (e.g. Cognex VisionPro and Insight, MVTec, LabVIEW) essential.
  • Working understanding of Optics, Lighting Techniques and a proven track record of having designed and develop Machine Vision hardware solutions with industrial cameras, essential.
  • Excellent Troubleshooting/Diagnostics skills. Basic Statistical analysis and sampling knowledge.
  • Digital Image Processing techniques and dataflows applied to industrial machine vision.
  • Quality System Requirement: In all actions, demonstrates a primary commitment to safety and product quality by maintaining compliance to the Quality Policy and all other documented quality processes and procedures.

Good to have:

  • Level 8 NFQ qualification or equivalent, Engineering or Science, preferred.
