The Hermitage Clinic is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities. The Pharmacy has responsibility for the provision of pharmaceutical services within the Hospital, including Dispensary services and Compounding services. The Pharmacy provides support across the clinical areas of the hospital and this role is important in making a significant contribution, developing and maintaining best practice in Pharmacy services. This includes the provision of the highest level of safety and regulatory compliance.
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of Pharmacy practice. As a key member of the frontline team, the pharmacy technician will demonstrate organisation, initiative, and effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a collaborative approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of change necessary to achieve organisational objectives.
- Rotate through dispensary, clinical, ward top-up and chemotherapy preparation, rotations.
- Prepare, supply and contribute to the provision of medicines and other items as may be required through dispensary and ward top-up services.
- Prepare medicines for administration on the oncology and haematology day units
- Undergo training to become a ward-based medicines management pharmacy technician conducting drug histories to enable medicines reconciliation by the pharmacist.
- Contribute to error-reporting activity if appropriate.
- Maintain records for purchasing, quality control, compounding, dispensing and clinical activities to the required standards.
- Provide advice and current medical information as instructed by the pharmacist to medical, nursing and other health care professionals on the appropriate, safe, effective and economic use of medicines
- Motivation of other pharmacy staff where applicable.
- Carrying out such duties as outlined in the pharmacy policies, procedures and guidelines, as per those guidelines
- Prepare and supply medicines and other items as may be required.
- Ensure accurate dispensing and timely distribution of drugs and medicines for inpatients or outpatients.
- Ensure medication reaches the patient in the correct form and dose.
- Counseling patients on the effects, dosage and route of administration of their drug treatments, particularly those who require complex drug therapy, when required.
- Communicating effectively with patients' relatives, community pharmacists, and general practitioners (GPs), etc.
- Ensuring medicinal products are stored appropriately and securely to ensure highest quality and patients’ and staffs’ safety.
- Supervising and checking the work of pharmacy students as necessary
- Work with the IT Department and clinicians in the development of computerised systems for patient management and ensure that these are maintained and upgraded.
- Carrying out such duties as outlined in the pharmacy policies.
- Assist with stock control, ordering and receipting.
- Ensure all transactions are appropriately recorded on the hospital computer system(s).
- Assist / deputise for other members of Pharmacy Team as required.
- Participate in team meetings as required.
- Promote a patient centred culture of openness and responsiveness to positive and constructive patient feedback and ensuring patient dignity, respect and choice is maintained in their care.
To be successful in this role, you will have a Pharmaceutical Technician’s Diploma awarded by the University of Dublin or a recognised qualification at least equivalent to above and a minimum of 1 year’s post-registration experience in an acute health care setting.
