Description:
We have a great opportunity for a passionate and detail-focused Production Editor to join the Guidebooks team in the Dublin, Ireland office. This role is offered as a permanent, full-time role reporting to the Managing Editor (Dublin).
The Production Editor (PE) is responsible for the layout and editorial project management of our iconic guidebooks. The PE coordinates the entire layout process, formatting text and other design elements in InDesign, and liaising with cartographers, book designers and other team members as necessary. The role also requires sound editorial judgement on issues such as avoiding defamation, cultural sensitivity, implementing house style and ensuring consistency, to deliver high-quality travel titles adhering to Lonely Planet's publishing standards, on deadline and to budget.
What You'll Do:
- Work with the Project Team, both in-house and freelance (writers, commissioning editors, cartographers, book designers and copy editors) to ensure the delivery of a high-quality guidebook to deadline, quality and cost requirements.
- Assess books against briefing documentation and troubleshoot production issues as they arise, laying out text, design elements, maps and images in InDesign, in accordance with Lonely Planet's process manuals.
- Ensure guidebooks adhere to Lonely Planet publishing standards, taking ownership of assigned titles and ensuring consistency, accuracy and reader useability throughout the book.
- Efficiently schedule time and communicate with stakeholders to ensure project deadlines are planned for and met.
- Trial new editorial processes and provide feedback on new features and products (as required).
- Contribute to product development and process-streamlining meetings, drafting and updating internal documentation (as required).
- Assist the senior and managing editors (as required).
- Assist with induction, mentoring and training of new editors (as required).
What We're Looking For:
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in relevant area (Publishing & Editing or Journalism preferred), or equivalent industry experience.
- Proficient desktop publishing skills (preferably InDesign).
- Excellent project-management and communication skills, including the ability to work to tight deadlines, and to quickly assess and prioritise project tasks and workloads.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Sound knowledge of grammar, punctuation and editing conventions, with previous experience in book editing or journalism preferred.
- Experience in spotting potential defamation or copyright infringement in text.
- Demonstrated ability to work with content management systems.
- Ability to adapt to new technology, processes and change.
- Good general knowledge of current travel industry, and a love of travel.
