Senior Engineer

Description:

Reporting to the Head of Group, you will be responsible for advanced electrical characterisation of high precision ‘mixed-signal’ components. Additionally, you will be responsible for the development of new techniques in the area of device electrical characterisation.

This role is focused on providing a high level of engineering support to industry in the area of precision electrical performance measurement of Integrated Circuit devices. As a Senior Engineer the role includes a high level of engineering solutions formulation to measurement issues, as well as working with the Head of Group towards generating new business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage client projects concerning the electrical measurements of advanced electronic components, including the planning and execution of the work. This requires a high level of initiative and the ability to plan effectively the project from beginning to conclusion
  • Manage IC design characterisation review meetings with the client. This includes communicating effectively and regularly with the client. The typical duration of each client project is 3 to 5 months and one is required to generate a high standard engineering report for clients. At times one may also be working as part of a client’s internal project team
  • Perform high precision electrical characterization of 'mixed signal' analog-digital components with key client contracts with industry. This requires the application of in-depth knowledge of high precision electrical evaluation of advance analogue, ‘mixed signal’ and digital integrated circuits, including high speed and high precision amplifiers, transceivers, ADCs and MEMS products
  • Drive the development of new processes within the assigned technology area(s)
  • Design and develop advanced test software in LabView, VEE or C++ to control the measurement systems in the appropriate manner to achieve the relevant level of measurement precision and in the optimum way
  • Custom design and build 'interface units' to facilitate the required high precision circuit measurements
  • Provide laboratory management role in overseeing correct usage of the laboratory by users, including: the organizing of equipment repair, calibration, procurement and commissioning of new equipment
  • Coaching and mentoring of other Device Characterisation personnel when requested in areas of measurement techniques, equipment use, quality control and problem solving
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers / stakeholders in order to develop a culture of continuous improvement
  • Coordinate new process tool procurement by managing development of technical specifications if and when required including liaising with contractors and external consultants on process issues/new technology /equipment introduction
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management System with an emphasis on continuous improvement
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards including generation and review of Risk Assessments (RAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and promote and implementing safe working practices within laboratory areas
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post

Essential Criteria

  • Honours degree in one of the following disciplines: Physics, Chemistry, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Maths
  • Typically 10+ years of experience in advanced IC electrical device characterisation
  • Advanced level of LabView certification
  • Experience of managing technology area – technical, operational, quality areas
  • Experience in the detailed technical translation between the customer needs and practical characterisation solutions
  • Experience of dealing with and supervising the activities of contractors/vendors/customers
  • Excellent communication and people skills including successful negotiation with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Very experienced in taking a lead role in complex projects
  • Has a recognised very broad and deep domain specific knowledge
  • Makes recommendations on future potential engineering challenges and solutions that meet the needs of customers
  • Maintains and develops collaboration that can contribute to funding of new projects
