Description:
This post consists of 2 parts: a Senior Speech & Language Therapist who has responsibility (alongside other senior colleagues) for the management and development of the Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) service to medical oncology and other oncology services and a practice tutor. The practice tutor will co-ordinate, support and develop the capacity and quality of practice education of SLT students attending Beaumont Hospital (including the St. Joseph’s Hospital site) on practice/clinical education placements. The post will involve working with people with both communication and swallowing difficulties.
The successful candidate will be part of integral part of the well-structured, multi-speciality Beaumont Hospital SLT team with excellent support and opportunities for CPD.
Responsible to
The post holder will be responsible to the Speech and Language Therapist Manager, Beaumont Hospital.
- To provide a comprehensive service to patients attending Beaumont Hospital for medical oncology and other oncology services, including appropriate clinical assessment and rehabilitation as required of both communication and swallowing disorders. T
- To contribute to the continued development of a person centred care environment with particular emphases on:
- The promotion of making interactions, documents and environments accessible for patients with regard to communication.
- The creation of the necessary conditions to ensure safe swallowing.
- To collaborate and liaise with the other Senior SLTs, specifically in Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology and Head and Neck Oncology services to ensure a seamless and comprehensive service for patients with cancer.
- To maintain close liaison with all relevant personnel with regard to the care and management of Patients.
- To develop and maintain the SLT service to assist the organisation to meet all relevant HIQA and other standards
- To develop and maintain expertise in the management of people living with long-term illness and disability and to ensure that professional standards are maintained.
- To provide SLT services across the whole service as cover if required.
- To be involved in VFSS clinics and/or other instrumental assessment as appropriate. Training will be provided as required.
- In the context of practice/clinical education, to liase with members of the SLT team and other relevant personnel regarding an SLT service for patients with acquired communication and/or swallowing difficulties
- To lead, co-ordinate, allocate and manage SLT practice/clinical education placements in Beaumont Hospital in consultation with the relevant HEIs
- To provide induction for SLT students attending Beaumont Hospital to include relevant policies and procedures
- To organise agreed learning contracts/placement objectives for students at the start of each placement
- To participate in the practice/clinical education of SLT students in collaboration with practice/clinical educators within the department
- To organise relevant tutorial groups and peer learning opportunities for SLT students during placement
- To provide advice, support and assistance to practice/clinical educators in the assessment of student performance
- To provide ongoing feedback to students about their performance in consultation with relevant practice/clinical educators and university staff,
- To actively seek and develop SLT practice/clinical placement opportunities within Beaumont Hospital in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders
- To promote inter-professional learning within Beaumont Hospital
- To participate in quality assurance mechanisms of the student learning environment
- To facilitate effective learning within practice for SLT students to include close liaison with all relevant personnel (i.e. patients, family members, other health care workers) to ensure a holistic, person and relationship centred approach to patient care.
- To maintain and develop professional knowledge and practice in relation to adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties and in conjunction with other SLTs, to provide a service to patient groups as agreed with the SLT Manager.
- To be involved in instrumental assesment clinics as appropriate.
- To liaise with other Practice Education Co-ordinators to ensure an optimum practice/clinical placement learning experience for students attending Beaumont Hospital
- To participate in the development and integration of practice/clinical education within the curriculum in alignment with accreditation standards of the HEI with the aim of integrating theory and fostering evidence-based practice
- To facilitate communication and effective working relationships between SLT colleagues and HEI based staff
- To evaluate the student learning experience within practice and the contribution of this to the whole learning experience
- To contribute to a professional practice/clinical education network that may include the development and implementation of innovative learning methodologies, common assessment criteria, benchmarking standards for practice/clinical placements, models of supervision, clinical teaching skills and the use of information technology.
- To develop and maintain a high standard of practice and to ensure that professional standards are maintained to include standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation
- To promote and develop links with a range of local services in order to develop practice/clinical education placement opportunities.
