The Clinical Specialist Speech & Language Therapist in ENT will lead the provision of an innovative and comprehensive Speech & Language Therapy service to ENT outpatients as the first point of care, in conjunction with the ENT team.
- Provide a clinical specialist Speech & Language Therapy service to outpatients triaged by the ENT team directly to the clinical specialist SLT ENT service.
- Collaborate closely with ENT colleagues as appropriate in the joint management of patients seen within the service.
- Evaluate services to demonstrate appropriateness and effectiveness; and report on these periodically
- Participate in service planning and service development relevant to this area and specialist grade.
- Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
- Maintain timely and accurate records in line with best clinical governance, organisational and legal requirements
- Lead the development of innovations in and adhere to best practice in quality standards and clinical effectiveness in Speech & Language Therapy.
- Develop service protocols and standards of care; disseminate and implement these.
- Act as a clinical resource to Speech & Language Therapists and other health care professionals at a local and national level.
- Participate in the Departments professional supervision programme.
- Lead, supervise and mentor assigned Speech & Language Therapists.
- Foster and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues, front line Managers, and other healthcare personnel
- Be accountable for own professional action and recognise own professional boundaries
- Work within departmental and national guidelines and professional code of conduct to ensure quality of care.
- Assist in the recruitment of new staff and the induction process.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned to him/her by the Speech & Language Therapy Manager.
- Lead and coordinate training of department Speech & Language Therapy colleagues in assessment and intervention approaches as relevant to the speciality.
- Provide ongoing education and supervision/support for speech and language therapists and Speech & Language Therapy students
- Provide relevant education and training for other healthcare staff
- Participate in relevant undergraduate and postgraduate training for speech and language therapists and other healthcare professionals
- Develop, facilitate, and evaluate relevant training programmes for speech and language therapists and other professionals.
- Participate in supervision and performance review with the Speech & Language Therapy Manager.
- Be responsible for her/his own continuous professional development to maintain and extend specialist knowledge and skills appropriate to the role.
- Plan, coordinate, evaluate, and develop own area of service, identify changing needs and opportunities, and demonstrate the achievement of the objectives of the service
- Develop and implement service / business plans, quality initiatives, audits etc. appropriate to specialist area, and report on outcomes
- Maintain and submit up-to-date statistics and other administrative records as required within the Speech & Language Therapy department and discuss regularly with the Speech & Language Therapy Manager
- To initiate and undertake quality improvement, audit, and research projects as appropriate to the post.
- To disseminate quality improvement and research outcomes to improve service delivery/patient care.
- Facilitate and jointly supervise undergraduate/postgraduate research projects as post allows.
- Actively participate in multi-disciplinary and multi-centred trials.
- Be familiar with quality improvement and research resources available within the hospital and from relevant hospital and external stakeholders
- Advise Speech & Language Therapy Manager on operational issues, issues of service delivery, including service pressures, equipment needs etc. and identify solutions in collaboration with Manager.
- Engage appropriately with all relevant stakeholders with respect of research issues e.g. patients, family members, funding bodies
